Restylane® Injectable Filler: Popular Dermatology Treatment for Facial Rejuvenation

Restylane® is a very popular cosmetic procedure. It is used to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, make lips plump and fuller, and improve acne scars. Since Restylane® is a non-animal filler, it is safe with no pre-testing required.

In a Restylane® treatment, the plastic surgeon injects the Restylane® gel beneath the skin with a fine gauge hypodermic needle. The gel goes to work immediately, lifting and plumping the skin beneath the wrinkle, thus imparting a more youthful look. When used as a lip treatment, Restylane® is injected right into and around the lips. Restylane® lip treatments are estimated to last twice as long as collagen lip treatments.

Restylane® is considered an extremely safe wrinkle treatment. It was approved by the FDA in 2003, but was widely used in Europe for many years before coming to the United States. Restylane® will dissolve naturally in time, and be safely absorbed into the body.

Most treatments take an hour or less. Although Restylane® treatments are not plastic surgery, they are usually performed by a plastic surgeon in his clinic or office. Some patients receive a local anesthetic for pain, and some get a topical anesthetic cream. In most cases, folds and wrinkles require only one treatment, with a repeat procedure in approximately six months or longer.

There is no actual recovery time after Restylane® treatments. You can resume your normal activities right away. Side effects may include redness, pain at injection sites, swelling, discomfort, and asymmetry of the lips. All of these are fairly rare and dissipate within a week or so.

The average Restylane® treatment results last around six months. This naturally depends on the person. Restylane® is a great alternative to more invasive procedures! The results are temporary, so if you aren’t happy with the treatment, it will wear off and be gone in a few months.
